Behavioral and Social Sciences

Multiple scientific disciplines shape the fields of Health Sciences and Sports Sciences and this multidisciplinarity is mirrored in the diversity and heterogeneity of research in Health and Sport Sciences at the School of Medicine and Health. Similarly, doctoral candidates in the Behavioral and Social Sciences program have diverse educational backgrounds and degrees. Their methodologies span from qualitative to quantitative approaches, from experiments to panel-data, from self-report to insurance claims data.  What their research shares, though, is the interest in (human) behavior and experience and the (social) context that shapes it.

Main characteristics of the program:

  • Interdisciplinary mentoring through the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC), consisting of a member of TUM School of Medicine and Health and TUM internal/external supervisors or mentors
  • Supervision agreement between doctoral candidate and TAC, clarifying early the respective responsibilities and roles
  • Candidates must provide evidence of sufficient funding (e.g., as TUM employee or as a scholarship holder) and, particularly “external candidates” of sufficient time resources (20h per week) for completion of the project
  • Applications for entry into the doctoral candidacy list are screened by an interdisciplinary committee for quality control
  • Qualification program with individually structured subject related courses, soft skill courses, optional participation in the program’s annual Winterschool and optional international research phase
