In the doctoral program Medical Doctorates (from 01.01.2014), each doctoral candidate requires a supervisor and two mentors. At least one mentor must come from a different institution (clinic/institute) than the supervisor. This generally increases the quality of the doctoral thesis, as input from outside also flows in. In addition, a constructive solution can be found more quickly for all parties involved in problematic situations.
Supervisors must be authorized members of the TUM (School of Medicine and Health) and be able to competently represent the topic of the doctoral project. As a rule, these are university lecturers, i.e. appointed professors, associate professors or private lecturers of the TUM School of Medicine and Health.
Mentors can be all members of the TUM or persons outside the TUM with whom the doctoral project cooperates. They must have proven their qualification by a doctoral degree.
Please also refer to the general information on mentoring at Program Overview - Mentoring
If your supervisor does not work at the TUM or TUM University Hospital sites or at an academic institution recognized by the GCMH (e.g. Helmholtz Zentrum München and Max Planck Institutes) in Munich, your mentor must be an appointed professor at the TUM School of Medicine and Health. When registering your doctoral project, you must also submit an appendix to the project plan in which you describe the planned integration into the academic environment of TUM by the appointed professor.
In addition, you must later explain in a self-report how you were involved in the academic environment of TUM and provide evidence of this through proof of participation.
You can download these documents in the section "For non-involved doctoral candidates".
The German version of the Regulations for the Award of Doctoral Degree, the GCMH Regulations and the Supervision Agreement are legally binding and can be found here.
